How to copy folders and update links between Drive files?

Manually copying folders in Google Drive and ensuring every link in Google Docs, Google Sheets, and Google Slides points to the newly copied files can be time-consuming. With Folgo integrated into Google Spreadsheets, you can streamline this process. This guide will walk you through the steps to copy an entire folder while automatically updating links between files.

Prerequisites

  • Folgo installed: Make sure you have the Folgo add-on installed in your Google Spreadsheet.
  • Correct permissions: You need to have permission to copy the folder(s) and files you want to duplicate.
  • Folder location: Know the Google Drive folder you intend to copy.

Open Folgo in Google Drive

Start Folgo within your Google Drive. Its icon can be found on the right. If you don't see it, click on the "<" arrow in order to show the side bar.

Access the Copy Feature

  • Click on the Copy Folder option.
  • This action will prompt you to select the folder you wish to copy. Select it directly in Google Drive by clicking on it once.

Once you have selected a folder, the Folgo interface will update. To choose where the copy should be created, click the pencil icon and select the destination folder in Google Drive, just like you selected the source folder.

  • You’ll see an option labeled Update links between Drive files. Check the box.

This ensures that any references inside Docs, Sheets, or Slides (such as links to other files or spreadsheet formulas pointing to external Sheets) are updated to their newly copied versions.

Start Copying

Click on the Copy button to begin the copying process. Folgo will create duplicates of each file and update all inter-file links in the newly created folder.

Review the Copied Folder

  • After Folgo completes the copying process, open the newly created folders and files.
  • Check a few of the copied Docs or Sheets to confirm that the links and references now point to the copied files rather than the originals.

Note: Formulas in spreadsheets must be manually revalidated to grant data-sharing access.

Conclusion

By following these steps, you can efficiently copy entire folders while automatically updating links between Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides. This saves you the hassle of manually fixing each reference and ensures that your newly copied files remain interconnected.
